Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble B vitamin.
Another name for vitamin B12 is cobalamin.
Vitamin B12 contains the mineral cobalt as part of its chemical structure.
Cyanocobalamin is the form of vitamin B12 generally used in supplements.
Alzheimer's Disease: People with Alzheimer's disease often have low levels of vitamin B12: whether the low vitamin levels are cause or results of this disease is unclear.
Elderly: Researchers estimate that 10% or more of older individuals might be deficient in vitamin B12.
Heart Disease: Low intake of vitamin B12 might increase blood levels of protein called homocysteine, which increases the risk for developing heart disease.
