Iodine![]() |

Iodized salt and water containing iodine are the best sources of iodine.
Iodized salt provides 400mcg. per teaspoon of salt.
"Natural" brands of sea salt generally are poor sources of iodine.
Saltwater shellfish and seafood and foods grown in iodine-rich soil close to the ocean also are good sources of this mineral.
Some bakeries add iodine to dough as a stabilizer; a slice of such bread provides approximately 150mcg. of iodine. Some foods, such as raw cabbage, turnips, cauliflower, soybeans, and peanuts, contain "goitrogens," which are compounds that can interfere with the body's ability to make thyroid hormones if consumed in excessive amounts.
