Tryptophan![]() |
||||
For most people, consuming high amounts of pure tryptophan is not associated with any health risks.
One study from Texas A&M University College of Medicine found that tryptophan supplements caused liver damage in otherwise healthy people.
A person with kidney or liver disease should not consume large amounts of amino acids without first consultin his or her physician.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, some trytophan supplements were found to be contaminated, causeing a rare nerve and muscle condition called eosinophilic-myalgia syndrome that can lead to death. Consequently, trytophan supplements were banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are no longer legal in the United States.
The minimum daily requirement of tryptophan for an average-size adult (150 pounds) is approximately 200mg. to 250mg.
