What is valine?

Valine is an essential amino acid.

A dietary source of valine is needed by adults, since the body cannot make this amino acid.

Valine belongs to the group of branch-amino acids.


Current research on valine?

Athletes: Valine, along with other branch-chain amino acids, might promote muscle recovery after physical exercise.

Maple Syrup Urine: Infants born with a disorder called maple syrup urine cannot handle the amino acid valine, leucine, and isoleucine, and eliminate these amino acids in their urine. Such infants might appear normal at birth, but soon show signs of poor sucking or swallowing, and experience seizures. If they survive the seizures, the risk of mental retardation is high.
